This is a wonderful little Atlas mountains day trip, that includes meeting the Berbers, exploring mountain country and visiting a stunning waterfall. As we start the day, we’ll guide you through the landscape and tell you about the history of the area – from the red city walls of Marrakech to the plains, the multitudes of green valleys, the gorges, the rivers, and of course, the waterfalls.

Just an hour and a half ride from Marrakech, the Atlas Mountains are like a different world. In the cool, fresh mountain air, you will have a chance to stop and take in the scenery and the atmosphere and even visit an original Berber house and learn about their ancient traditions. They will welcome you and show you how to make traditional Amazigh mint tea. When we get to the last village, we will take a guided walk along some attractive trails and through some villages to reach the waterfall.

Our lunch will be delicious and full of flavor and served with a local Berber family. It will then be a half hour of walking back to the car before we return to Marrakesh at around 5pm.

Day 1

Marrakech – Imlil Valley 1740m

We’ll start our trip with a pickup from your Marrakech accommodation in an air-conditioned, comfortable minivan or 4wd vehicle.

When we get going, you’ll enjoy the stunning scenery on your way to the Imlil Valley (about 1 hour and a half drive) from Marrakech. When we arrive at our destination, you’ll get the chance to admire the landscape and get spectacular views as far as the eye can see. There will also be the opportunity to take a scenic hike with a local professional guide (for 1-2 hours round trip) and to visit a Berber women’s cooperative extracting Argan oil (a unique Moroccan oil).

To get to the second valley (and to the town of Asni) we’ll travel through and explore many traditional local native areas. For example, there are Berber villages built from traditional materials like adobe and stones and with an incredible contrast between colors like red clay, brown, yellow, blue sky, green forests, white snow and more… Our drive will be slow and smooth so you’ll get the chance to stop anywhere you want; there’s no rush.

Our destination, Imlil, is in the third valley, where you will be provided a delicious lunch. This will be a typical Berber meal with soup, salad, Berber tajine, couscous, dessert, mint tea and mineral water in a local home. This will be a great spot to have some lunch as we’ll be surrounded by breathtaking scenery in an area famous for its fruit trees (there’s apple, walnut, almonds, peaches and more) and its views of the snowy summits of High Atlas Mountains.

Eventually, our adventure concludes with a drive back along a different route to Marrakech via the Kik Plateau. We arrive home at approximately 5.00pm.

Please note that you can visit the weekly souk (Berber market) in Asni every Saturday and in Tahanaout every Tuesday.
