This 5-day trek explores the beautiful valleys and mountain passes surrounding Imlil and the AĂ¯t Oussaden region in the High Atlas. Designed for active travelers seeking culture and nature, the route follows ancient mule trails linking remote Berber communities.
You will walk through terraced fields of barley and corn, walnut and juniper forests, and panoramic mountain passes overlooking dramatic landscapes. Along the way, you’ll meet local villagers, shepherds, and families, offering a genuine glimpse into daily mountain life.
Comfortable guesthouses or traditional bivouacs provide warm hospitality each evening, while luggage is transported by mule, allowing you to enjoy the trek with only a light daypack.
Your adventure begins with a scenic drive from Marrakech heading south toward the western High Atlas. The road winds through the dramatic Moulay Brahim Gorge before reaching the peaceful foothills near Imi Oughlad, where the trek starts. Towering peaks dominate the horizon, including Mount Toubkal, alongside Aksoual and Aguelzim.
After meeting your mule team, the walk begins along steady mountain paths climbing through pine and juniper woodland and small cultivated plots. Reaching the Tizi n’Tachte pass, you’ll pause to enjoy sweeping views across valleys dotted with traditional Berber villages. After a picnic surrounded by mountain silence, the trail gradually descends into the AĂ¯t Oussaden Valley, arriving at the red-earth village of Tiziane. Dinner and overnight are spent in a guesthouse or comfortable bivouac.
Leaving Tiziane behind, the route follows the AĂ¯t Oussaden Valley through walnut groves and terraced farmland. The steady ascent toward the Tizi n’Taghrhourte pass offers beautiful valley views and a peaceful rhythm of walking. Near a natural spring, you’ll stop for a picnic break in a tranquil mountain setting.
In the afternoon, the trail winds gently downhill along forest edges until reaching the quiet village of D’knt (also known as Agouns n Assoul). Here, you’ll enjoy dinner and overnight accommodation in a local gîte or camp.
The morning walk takes you higher through groves of walnut trees and cultivated terraces of barley and corn. Along the way, you may encounter shepherds tending goats and sheep, and villagers carrying herbs and firewood along ancient paths.
Crossing the Tizi n’Tagdalte pass, the route descends among juniper trees to a secluded spring — an ideal picnic stop. Refreshed, you continue along mountain tracks that lead toward the upper AĂ¯t Oussaden Valley, eventually reaching the charming village of Tizi Oussem. From there, a short climb brings you to the seasonal hamlet of Tamsoult, where you spend the night in a gĂ®te or camp.
Today includes a visit to the small waterfalls near Azib Tamsoult before climbing steadily toward the Tizi n’Mzzik pass. From the top, wide-open views stretch across the surrounding mountains and valleys.
Descending toward Imlil, you rejoin the main Toubkal Valley and settle into a comfortable guesthouse for the evening. The village sits beneath the shadow of Mount Toubkal, creating a dramatic alpine atmosphere.
The final day forms a rewarding circular route through diverse mountain landscapes. Leaving Imlil, the trail climbs gently into the Tamatert Valley before crossing the Tizi n’Tamatert pass. The descent leads into the Imenane Valley, passing through picturesque Berber hamlets surrounded by almond, walnut, and apple orchards.
Continuing along winding mule paths, you reach Ikiss and neighboring villages with superb views toward Jbel OukaĂ¯meden and surrounding passes. After a picnic with panoramic scenery, the route turns west, crossing another mountain pass before descending into the AĂ¯t Mizane Valley. The trail loops back toward Imlil, where your vehicle awaits for the return drive to Marrakech, marking the end of an unforgettable High Atlas trekking journey.
